The concept of the Doctoral School of Bialystok University of Technology (DSBUT):
The idea of the Doctoral School of Bialystok University of Technology (DSBUT) is interdisciplinary preparation of doctoral students for scientific development through independent and tailored to scientific needs selection of courses taught by highly qualified and socially competent staff. The DSBUT graduates are persons planning and realizing their scientific career, prepared to meet the role of a contemporary scientist – an authority in a chosen scientific discipline and a respected educator with social trust.
Education and conditions for graduation:
Education in the Doctoral School of Bialystok University of Technology is conducted in Polish and English and lasts 4 years (8 semesters). The education in the School ends with the submission of a doctoral thesis. It is allowed to complete the education earlier, provided that the education programme is implemented with the obtained set of learning outcomes, in accordance with the Polish Qualifications Framework at the 8th level (Journal of Laws of 2018, item 2218), and the doctoral thesis is submitted.
With the approval of the Director of the DSBUT, an individual mode of study is available at the request of a doctoral student in special, justifiable cases.
The DSBUT provides education in the following academic disciplines:
1) automation, electronic, electrical engineering and space technologies;
2) information and communication technology;
3) biomedical engineering;
4) civil engineering, geodesy and transport;
5) mechanical engineering;
6) environmental engineering, mining and energy;
7) management and quality studies.
The curriculum of the DSBUT includes learning modules that can be grouped as follows:
- obligatory courses – marked with O;
- optional academic courses – marked with F;
professional training involving teaching or participating in the teaching of undergraduate or postgraduate courses. A participant of the doctoral school may teach or participate in teaching during the winter or summer semester, not exceeding 60 teaching hours per year. Settlement of professional training shall be made on an annual basis, after the end of classes in the summer semester.
Types and forms of classes:
Both obligatory and optional courses implemented within the DSBUT educational programme may have the following forms of classes: lecture, tutorial, laboratory classes, project classes, specialist workshop, seminar.
The aim of obligatory courses is to prepare a doctoral student for his/her future role as a researcher or a researcher and a lecturer. Optional courses, on the other hand, are designed to provide doctoral students with the necessary, up-to-date and targeted subject knowledge directly related to their scientific development, as well as to the completion of their theses. Optional courses will be presented to doctoral students in the form of a single database of optional courses (BPF) available for all scientific disciplines represented in the DSBUT.
The BPF can be corrected at the latest six months before the beginning of the next academic year. Proposals for courses to the BPF can be submitted by both Bialystok University of Technology employees and researchers from other universities or scientific research units.
A specialist lecture (1 ECTS credit), delivered by eminent specialists, intended for all the DSBUT doctoral students, will be held at least once per academic year.
Classes in the DSBUT are taught by researchers or lecturers whose scholarly achievements in the represented academic discipline are significant. Both the teachers and the courses included in the BPF should receive a positive opinion from the DSBUT Curriculum Committee.
Selection of courses:
A doctoral student, at the latest four months before the beginning of the academic year, selects the optional courses, for the following two semesters, from the BPF provided. It is required that the choice of courses is approved by a supervisor and also enables the fulfilment of the required learning outcomes. In justified cases, a doctoral student, with the approval of a supervisor, may apply to the Director of the DSBUT to change the chosen optional subjects.
A doctoral student is obliged to pass the obligatory courses, in accordance with the curriculum. It is required that a doctoral student documents the acquired competencies (all required learning outcomes) when submitting his/ her thesis.
ECTS credits:
A student completes a study plan equivalent to 36 ECTS credits. Throughout his/ her course of study, a student is obliged to complete courses in English, from the base of optional courses and from outside the represented discipline, respectively for at least 2 and 1 ECTS point.
The Director of the DSBUT may agree to credit participation in foreign research internships, academic exchanges, short-term research stays, summer or winter schools and similar activities as optional courses – but not more than 4 ECTS credits throughout the course of study.
Completing courses:
Doctoral students at the beginning of the first semester of the DSBUT are required to complete “Occupational Health and Safety Training” (4 hours) and “Library Training” (3 hours).
Examinations and final tests in courses included in the study plan end with ZAL (pass) or NZAL (fail) grade. A student is obliged to complete all courses which allow him/her to gain a sufficient number of ECTS credits necessary to complete an academic year of study. The conditions and form of completing each course are described in a course description card.
Other matters related to studies are regulated by the Regulations for the Doctoral School of Bialystok University of Technology..
